Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy for Middle-Aged Women after Spousal Bereavement

Abstract
Purpose of this study is to develop and conduct cognitive behavior treatment program for middle-aged women in their spousal bereavement by applying CBT on Worden¡¯s Four Tasks of Grief (2009), then we tried to verify its cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects. In addition, after 3 months since the end of the program, we checked to see if the program is maintained. CBT program of this study is composed by focusing self-monitoring, cognitive reframing and problem solving training. For objects of the study, we randomly allocated 10 middle-aged women in their spousal bereavement to each experiment andcontrol groups. The program was conducted twice a week for experimental group, for 120 minutes, with the total of 12 times. Main outcomes of the study are as follows. Firstly, automatic thoughts, negative cognitive behavior, and depression have been decreased dramatically for experiment group that compared before and after the program, while stress coping behavior, social problem resolving ability has been significantly increased. Secondly, for experimental groups that compared results before and after 3 months since the program has meaningfully decreased their automatic thoughts, negative cognitive behavior, depression and anxiety while their stress coping behavior, social problem resolving ability has been considerably increased.
